What is the NCEDC?

Seismogram bar

The Northern California Earthquake Data Center is a joint project of the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and the USGS in Menlo Park. The NCEDC serves as an "on-line" archive for various types of digital data relating to earthquakes. Although the primary focus of the NCEDC is northern and central California, some data sets include sites in southern California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. The data sets include earthquake catalogs, seismograms, GPS, and other geophysical data such as strain, tilt, creep, etc.

The NCEDC is housed with the computing facilities at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory in McCone Hall. The BSL and NCEDC computers share a high-speed 100 MBit switched network. The NCEDC archive hardware and software consists of two Sun system servers, a DISC 517 slot jukebox with four 5.2 GByte Magneto Optical (MO) drives, an 11-slot AIT tape jukebox which holds 25 GBytes per tape, and the SAM-FS hierarchical filesystem management software. The hardware and software system can be configured to automatically create multiple copies of each data file. The NCEDC is using this feature to create an online copy of each data file on MO media, and another copy on AIT tape which is stored offline.

Doug Neuhauser is manager of the NCEDC, under the direction of Barbara Romanowicz of the BSL. Andre Basset (BSL), Lind Gee (BSL), Fred Klein (USGS), Hal MacBeth (USGS), Rick McKenzie (BSL), Mark Murray (BSL), David Oppenheimer (USGS), and Stephane Zuzlewski (BSL) all contribute to the development and operations of the archive. Others who have contributed include Will Prescott (USGS), Rick Lester (USGS), and Ray Baxter (BSL).

If you use data from the NCEDC, we ask that you acknowledge the data center and the organizations that contributed the data.
