The EW component was decidedly assymetric, the movements C of the pen being much greater in a direction E of the mean position than C to the W of it. Since the first shift of the ground, as indicated by C the horizontal components, was NE, the origin must have lain off to the C SW of the Lick Station. The distance of origin was between 8 and 10 C miles. The earthquake was therefore due to a slip on the Hayward Fault.
