The UC Berkeley Seismological Lab operates a diverse set of geophysical instrumentation in northern and central California. Data collected under the BK network code may generally by separated into four different classes or groups of instrumentation:

  1. Surface broadband and strong-motion sensors
  2. Borehole geophones and accelerometers
  3. Borehole geophones, tensor strainmeters, GPS receivers
  4. Ocean-bottom observatories

The first class of instrumention is often referred to as the Berkeley Digital Seismic Network (BDSN), while the second is known as the Northern Hayward Fault Network (NHFN). The third is a new project known as the Mini-Plate Boundary Observatory (MPBO). The ocean-bottom observatories data currently consists of data from deployments in Monterey Bay (MOBB).

At times, the name BDSN is used to include all instrumentation under the BK network code as well as to refer only to the sparse broadband network. Details about each subset of instrumentation are available - please see the specific pages for the BDSN, NHFN, MPBO, and MOBB.

Data access
Waveform data from the BK network are available in SEED format. Several tools provide access to SEED format data at the NCEDC, both in terms of querying the archives and allowing data requests.

Help on using these tools is available.

The IRIS DMC also archives data for the BDSN station CMB.
